Throughout the past few days I have been reading stories about Patrick Witt, a Nebraska Cornhusker Quarterback, asking to be released from his scholarship. Many stories have come out about this, but one caught my attention.
I read a story today that said he wanted a guarantee that he would be the starter for the Huskers by the end of spring practice. This type of thing is starting to become a trend for college players. Many times recently (no I don’t have examples), stories have come out about quarterbacks and other players expecting to be named the starter for their position before they have even had a chance to prove themselves.
Back when I played college football, spring practice was the time to prove yourself. It was a time when there were no games to get ready for, it was just hard work and proving that you can learn the system, work hard, and prove that you are good enough to be the starter for that position. Hearing that college athletes are starting to demand that decision before spring practice is a little disheartening.
I agree with the story I read this morning that Bo Pelini is right to let Witt go. One of the best things that a Quarterback can have for himself is a competition for his position. I think we have proved throughout all of sports that competition for a position will make us all work harder. That is the only way that most of us will succeed.
For the team that Witt might be transferring to, I leave you with this thought. Nebraska had this happen to them in the past with Sam Keller. Keller had the same sort of this happen to him that Witt did. He was at Arizona State, found out that he was being replaced (or possibly replaced) at the Quarterback position, so he transferred schools. When he came to Nebraska he was looked upon with great hope that he could help turn the team around. But he proved that he was a self centered player and person and didn’t do much for the Husker program. I think most people would agree with me (though I wish injuries on no one), that when he got injured and Joe Ganz stepped in it was the best thing to happen to the program in years.
But if you want to quit and try to go to another team to try to look like a big shot, I guess that is fine. Good luck Patrick Witt in your future career, and GO HUSKERS!

Witt never asked for a guarantee on being named the starter at the end of spring ball…he just asked for a starter to be named at the end of spring ball. That’s it.
From the news reports I read early on in the saga they portrayed it differently. They all made it sounds like Witt wanted to be named the starter. But who knows, Witt could be trying to cover now that the story has blown up so much. It is looking like a good competition for the QB spot right now though.
